France to cancel poor countries debts
French President Jacques Chirac announced on Friday that France would cancel all, instead of 90 percent, of commercial Paris Club debts it is owed by 19 poor countries, of which 15 are African.

US Treasury Secretary-designate Paul O'Neill gave the IMF an easy ride in Senate confirmation hearings, offering the global lender some gentle advice and forgiving its past mistakes as unintentional, reports Reuters.

Italian G8 presidency must complete unfinished business of debt cancellation
Debt campaigners have welcomed the announcement by Giuliano Amato, the Italian Prime Minister, that debt and poverty reduction in the poorest countries will top the agenda at this years G8 summit, but warned that if the debt crisis is to be finally solved, a New Deal on Debt is needed in 2001.
